Kevin Chalfant was briefly the lead singer of Journey. In 1993, Chalfant was asked to fill in for Steve Perry at a live performance for a charity roast of Herbie Herbert at Bimbo's in San Francisco. He performed five songs with Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Steve Smith and Aynsley Dunbar. Chalfant was invited to join the band shortly following the performance. Chalfant then began writing material in 1994 with Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain in anticipation of a new album and tour. Perry returned in 1995 to record Trial By Fire, leaving Chalfant on his own.
